Big Dance 2008 Photo Competition winner. Dancer, Amie Fulcher in front of the London Eye
How long have you been photographing dance? And how did you start out?
I began whilst studying Dance at Roehampton University taking photographs of friends for their portfolios and progressed from there.
What inspires you about photographing dance?
I’ve always had a passion for dance and I love being able to capture one special moment in the movement, and that movement can tell a thousand words but always something different to different people.
Favourite Big Dance image and why.
My favourite image is of dancer Amie Fulcher in front of the London Eye which was one of the winning photographs of the 2008 Big Dance photography competition. With a theme of "Dancing in the Streets of London" we could think of nothing more iconic than the London Eye to use as a backdrop to our dance shot. With an impressive jump soaring up in front of the Eye for me this encapsulated the feeling of freedom when you dance along with the amazing landscape of London City.
What tips/advice would you give to someone starting out photographing dance?
I would advise a newcomer to dance photography to experiment with different styles of shots and discover your own style. Try and use any friends you may have in dance to experiment to build your confidence and look for what it is you want to see in your photograph when it is complete.
